(Maricopa) On February 15th, thirteen students from the Desert Wind Middle School and Maricopa Wells Middle School Blended Learning
Programs attended the Sustainability Solutions Celebration at El Chorro in Paradise Valley. The three teams were invited after winning three of the
five Sustainable Community Awards at the Future Cities regional competition back in
January. The award, as well as the celebration at El Chorro, was sponsored by Arizona State University's Walton College of Sustainability and the
Rob and Melani Walton Sustainability Solutions Initiative.
The three groups presented their cities to Rob Walton, former CEO of Walmart, as well as other CEOs and university professors from around the
world. Mrs. Szoltysik stated, "They were all impressed by our student's knowledge of engineering, sustainability and the innovative designs within
their future cities." During the presentation, each student was called up on stage and given a framed certificate. Desert Wind Blended Learning
Teacher Shannon Hull stated, "We are so proud of how our students showcased their hard work last night. Their ability to speak to adults in
engineering and sustainability professions about their project and their ideas for future innovations is amazing!"
